Why does diagnosing GTM signal require someone outside the building?
Because this work is foundational, not tactical.
Your PMM, growth lead, or sales leader could attempt it, but in practice they are going to prioritize task execution: demos, campaigns, and pipeline targets. Deep signal diagnosis requires someone to step back from output and question the underlying ICP, value proposition, and buyer journey assumptions. Quarterly pressure kills its momentum.
It’s also difficult to objectively challenge the thesis you built. Early traction came from founder intuition.
